'Inside Out' Wins Gold at 88th Academy Awards

To the surprise of no one, Pixar's fifteenth feature film Inside Out took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at last week's 88th Academy Awards.

Since its release in June, the film has gone on to become a worldwide sensation, earning praise from critics and audiences alike. It performed exceedingly well at the box office, raking in $356.5 million domestically and a walloping total of $856.8 million worldwide, making it Pixar's second-highest grossing film domestically, and third worldwide.

Pixar's own Woody and Buzz presented the award, but not before engaging in some playful banter.

This marks just one of many accolades won by Inside Out, following its Best Animated Feature Film wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Critics' Choice Awards, to name a few.

Inside Out was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay but lost to Spotlight. The brilliant Sanjay's Super Team, the Pixar short that was attached to The Good Dinosaur in theaters, was nominated for Best Animated Short Film but unfortunately did not take home the prize, losing out to Bear Story.

A big congratulations to Pete Docter, Jonas Rivera, and the entire crew of Inside Out! The film deserves every ounce of praise it has received and is a beautiful, touching story that anyone can relate to and will no doubt be cherished by audiences for years to come.

I'd also like to acknowledge Pixar's other recent feature film The Good Dinosaur, which, with all the hype surrounding its predecessor, has sadly been overlooked by the general public. It's certainly a much simpler, quieter film than Inside Out, but there is beauty in simplicity, and The Good Dinosaur is a perfect example of that. It's a lovely little movie with a unique flavor and a great message, and I hope more people will discover and appreciate it as it grows older. It's out on home media now, so I highly encourage you to check it out if you haven't already.

'Riley's First Date?' Premieres at D23 Expo

A long-running Pixar tradition is that of including an original short based on the latest theatrical Pixar feature on the home release for said feature. The Incredibles had Jack-Jack Attack, Cars had Mater and the Ghostlight, WALL-E had BURN-E, and so forth.

Inside Out is the latest film to receive a home media short film, and Pixar took advantage of this weekend's D23 Expo to screen the new short, Riley's First Date?, for attendees.

The short is reportedly very funny and was received warmly by the crowd. Director Josh Cooley, who is also co-directing Toy Story 4, took the stage alongside Inside Out director Peter Docter and producer Jonas Rivera to introduce the short, which they say was inspired by every father's fear of having their daughter show up one day with a boy. The short sees Riley's parents having to deal with this very issue, and hilarity ensues.

Fortunately the rest of the world will not have to wait long to see Riley's First Date? as it will, of course, be included on Inside Out's DVD and Blu-ray releases, which hit stores November 3, less than three months from now.

'Inside Out' Debuts to Stellar Reviews

With the film a mere month away, reviews have begun to roll in for Pixar's Inside Out. The film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday and has garnered quite the enthusiastic response.

Twelve reviews in, the film holds a 100% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety, Vanity Fair and The Hollywood Reporter, to name a few, have all published reviews singing the film's praises. Some have also taken to Twitter to express their love of Pixar's latest:

So far, Inside Out is shaping up to be Pixar's biggest critical hit since Toy Story 3. Cars 2 was the studio's first film to not receive critical acclaim, and though Brave and Monsters University were both received positively, they were not the critical darlings that, say, Up, WALL-E, or the Toy Story films were. Inside Out, however, seems like it will silence those still claiming that Pixar has "lost its touch" and will no doubt become another cherished classic in the Pixar library.

Inside Out opens June 19; just one month from now!

New 'Inside Out' Trailer Is Packed with Emotions

Today's the day. The second full-length trailer, and third one overall, for Pixar's upcoming Inside Out dropped today, as promised. If you haven't watched it yet, drop whatever it is you are doing and watch it below. If you have already seen it, watch it again!

I predicted yesterday that this trailer would be the one that would truly make Inside Out seem like a must-see film, an event that no one can miss out on...and I don't mean to brag or anything, but I was absolutely right.

Previous trailers had given us a taste of the whole concept behind the film, but this one not only paints a better picture as to what the story will be, but bears testament to the fact that Inside Out is a Pixar film through and through, with all the laughs, inventiveness, gorgeous visuals, and most importantly, raw emotion that audiences have come to expect from the studio. The inclusion of "More Than a Feeling" was also a fabulous touch.

Without giving away too much, the new trailer does what the previous ones did not; it gives us a peek at the film's heart. As is usual for Pixar movies, Inside Out will clearly tug at the heart strings. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer alone includes multiple shots of what appear to be very emotional scenes - which is to be expected, I guess, given the film revolves around emotions.

Additionally, this trailer shows off the sheer ambition and ingenuity of Pixar's latest feature, offering glimpses at the different parts of the mind, including Long-Term Memory, Imagination Land, and my personal favorite, Dream Production. The two previous trailers had focused exclusively on Headquarters, the control center from where the emotions view life, so this new trailer marks the first time that we have gotten to see just how expansive the world of Riley's mind really is.

Why no animation studio has ever tackled this concept before, at least in the form of a full-length feature, is beyond me. Perhaps the idea of a film based around the human mind is a bit intimidating; the possibilities are, after all, virtually endless. This trailer, however, reaffirms my belief that Pixar is more than capable of making a film this risky and daring and knocking it out of the park - way out of the park.

As of right now, Inside Out is exactly 100 days away. That may seem like forever, but June 19th will be here before you know it. In the meantime, why not watch the trailer again? Or, you can also watch this fun little 18-second promo featuring the film's cast. Is it just me, or do all the voice actors bear uncanny resemblance to their respective characters?

What did you think of today's trailer? How pumped are you for Inside Out? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Colorful New 'Inside Out' Poster; New Trailer Premieres Tuesday

With the film just a couple of months away, the marketing for Inside Out continues to pick up speed. A new poster has arrived, and it features the five main emotions from the film in front of a very vibrant backdrop. Pixar's posters often go all out in terms of color and are always very appealing to the eye (the ones for Toy Story 3 and Monsters University come to mind), and this one is no exception.

Also, look forward to a brand new trailer for the film tomorrow, premiering on The Ellen Show. If you can't catch Ellen, fear not; the trailer will almost certainly be uploaded online shortly after.

While the past two trailers have been great, I have a feeling this one will be the one that will really make audiences want to run out and see the film and show that this will be a movie to be remembered through years to come. The people who are not yet sold on the film may very likely have their minds changed tomorrow, and as for the die-hard fans...I sense that this trailer will break our excitement meters.

Check back tomorrow for the new trailer! Inside Out hits theaters June 19.

First Look at 'The Art of Inside Out'

During the making of every Pixar film, artists at the studio create hundreds and hundreds of pieces of artwork, many of which are never seen by the public. The good news is that for every Pixar film comes a whole book dedicated entirely to the artwork that went into the creation of the film, so that we, the fans, can enjoy it.

The cover artwork for The Art of Inside Out has been revealed via Amazon , where the book is now available for pre-order. This may very well be the book's finalized cover, but keep in mind that Pixar art books often bear temporary placeholder covers when they first show up online.

The official description for the book:

"The Art of Inside Out provides an exclusive look into the artistic exploration that went into the making of this vibrant film. Featuring concept art—including sketches, collages, color scripts, and much more—and opening with a foreword by actress Amy Poehler and introduction by the film’s writer and director Pete Docter, this is the ultimate behind-the-scenes experience of the making of this landmark film."

Set inside the vast world of the human mind, Inside Out promises to be one of Pixar's most inventive and out-there films yet. The film's 176-page art book will be a thing to marvel at, no doubt.

The Art of Inside Out arrives May 26, just in time for the movie's release!

New 'Inside Out' TV Spot Shows Off Brain Freeze

A new Inside Out television spot has surfaced, showing off some tiny bits of new footage. The highlight is undeniably the part where Riley takes a big sip of a cold beverage and the inevitable happens - brain freeze. Watch the TV spot below:

Once again, Pixar reaffirms its ability to take a seemingly ordinary concept and turn it into a clever and imaginative experience onscreen. Also, keep in mind that this is only a very, very, very small fraction of what we'll see in Inside Out when it hits theaters; a movie set inside the human mind opens an endless amount of possibilities and different routes for the artists at the studio to explore, which makes this film all the more exciting, so expect to see plenty more moments like this one in the finished product.

Inside Out arrives June 19, 2015. Stay tuned for more updates!

Preview the 'Inside Out' Toy Line

With every new Pixar film comes a colorful plethora of new toys for both young ones and passionate collectors to enjoy. We recently got a look at the upcoming toy line for Inside Out, which features everything from posable figures to plush toys.

Japanese manufacturer TOMY has been tasked with producing lines of toys based on the characters from both Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur. Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter, who happens to be a massive toy aficionado himself, said this of the company:

“When I visited TOMY’s headquarters in Japan, I was impressed by their commitment to quality and craftsmanship. The toys they've created for Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur are fantastic—they've truly brought our characters to life.”

Pictured below are some of the posable, highly-detailed figures of Inside Out's unique array of characters that TOMY has crafted.

Toy manufacturer Funko's 3-inch Pop! vinyl figures have also grown increasingly popular over the past few years, and the company has announced that the five main characters from Pixar's new film will all be getting Pop! renditions. These are a definite must-have for Pixar fans and collectors alike. Check them out below.

Additionally, Funko will release plush toys of Anger and Sadness as part of their Fabrikations line.

Lastly, the image below shows the plush toys of the film's characters that will be released later this year, and also gives us our first look at a peculiar pink elephant creature, a previously unheard of character in the film; Bing Bong, Riley's imaginary friend. It should be interesting to see what role he plays in the film.

Keep in mind these are only a handful of the toys being made for Inside Out, and we will likely get a further look at even more from the film's toy line in two weeks at the New York Toy Fair.

Inside Out arrives in theaters on June 19th, so the toys should start arriving in stores sometime in May, or perhaps even late April. Keep your eyes peeled!

New 'Inside Out' Stills Showcase Orbs and the Train of Thought

With just five months to go until the release of Inside Out, promotion for the film is beginning to pick up speed. Two new stills from the film have surfaced, the first of which features Joy and Sadness aboard the literal embodiment of the Train of Thought. In the background, we get our first real look at the expansive world of 11-year-old Riley's mind beyond the control hub that has been showed in all previous stills and trailers. This is the first time we get to see just how vast the mind really is.

The second still shows Joy in the aforementioned control hub of the mind, with shelves in the background stocked with the memory orbs that appear to play a large role in the film. From the looks of things, each orb takes on the color of the emotion linked with the particular memory stored in that orb. The yellow orbs contain happy memories, the green ones have memories of disgust, and so forth.

Overall, Inside Out remains shrouded in secret, but personally I think that is for the best. It is hard to know what to expect in a film this ambitious, and the folks at Pixar are using this to their advantage, teasing us bit by bit, leaving us hungry for more. It's a brilliant strategy, really.

Expect to see many more stills and other promotion material for Inside Out in the coming months as the film's release draws nearer.

Inside Out hits theaters June 19th!

'Inside Out': New Trailer, Posters, and More

It's been a hectic couple of months for this blogger, so unfortunately I have not been able to update this blog as often as I would have liked to, but fear not, I should be back on top of things in the new year. The good news is that as 2015 approaches (it may have already arrived depending on where you are), the flow of Pixar news is returning to its regular pace with two new Pixar films on the way. Here are a few bits of news regarding Pixar's upcoming Inside Out you may have missed.

Of course, the first full-length trailer for the film was released this month, and if you haven't seen it, you're in for a treat. Check it out below:

Rather than following the standard trailer formula and showing brief clips from different parts of the movie, this trailer gives us a taste of Inside Out's look and feel through a quick scene from the film, showing a dinnertime exchange between the film's primary "setting", 11-year-old Riley, and her parents. We know the film will revolve around Riley and her emotions, but what's interesting about this trailer is that we also get a glimpse inside the heads of both her mother and father, making for a clever and hilarious scene. Also, notice how Sadness seems to be the driving force in the mother's mind, while in the father's mind Anger is the leader. In Riley's mind, however, there seems to be a lack of order and cooperativeness among the different emotions.

Pixar also released these colorful individual posters for each of the film's main characters; Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger, as well as a short video for each of the emotions, which you can watch on the studio's official YouTube channel.

Lastly, two stills from the film (below) as well as a lovely piece of concept art (above) made their way online this week. Whether the film is good or bad (although I am quite confident that it will be the former), one thing is for sure; the film will be visually stunning, which is to be expected, of course, with it being a Pixar release and all.

With every new piece of promotion that is released for Inside Out I get more excited, and by the looks of it people around the world in general seem to be looking forward to the film as well. With the seemingly infallible Pete Docter at the helm, this film looks all set to become yet another classic in the Pixar library.

Inside Out hits theaters June 19th of this new year--happy new year, by the way!

Pixar Debuts Teaser for 'Inside Out'

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's finally here. After what seems like an eternity of patiently waiting, Pixar has finally released a teaser trailer for their fifteenth feature film, Inside Out. So without further ado, here it is:

By intelligently reminding us of how great their past successes have been, Pixar amps up the excitement for what looks set to be another winner for them. Only a fraction of the minute-and-a-half teaser has footage from the film itself (or of the film's characters, anyway), but it's put together so flawlessly that nothing else is necessary to get the point across: this film will be something special.

Judging by the teaser, Inside Out will fit right in with with the Emeryville studio's fourteen other features. The trailer promises everything we've come to expect from a Pixar film; gorgeous visuals, unique character designs, a top-notch voice cast, intriguing new worlds, and a heartfelt story.

The film is directed by the brilliant Pete Docter, who has built quite the reputation for himself over the course of his career at Pixar. He made his directorial debut in 2001 with Monsters, Inc. and later directed fan-favorite Up (2009), which went on to become the second animated film in history to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, following Walt Disney Animation's Beauty and the Beast (1991). The Pixar name already means the audience will have high expectations, but Docter's pristine track record raises the bar even higher for next summer's Inside Out.

Additionally, the studio also released an image (top) of the film's main characters, Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith), as well as a teaser poster for the new movie (below).

Pixar's "major emotion picture" Inside Out hits theaters June 19th, 2015.

New Details on 'Inside Out', Pixar Announces 'Lava'

2014 has sure been painfully slow in terms of Pixar news, and I am not proud of having only published eight posts this year prior to this one. However, the animation powerhouse did recently give us some insight into what they are cooking up for us at the moment and it all seems very promising.

Of course, we all know that Pete Docter, the mastermind behind previous Pixar features Monsters, Inc. and Up, has been hard at work on his latest project Inside Out for several years now. The film, which takes audiences into the world inside the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley, is due in just a little under a year from now, and last month Pixar previewed the film at the Annecy Film Festival in France, where those in attendance were treated to a clip from the studio's latest feature. The approximately 5-minute-long clip reportedly showed the birth of the character Riley and then progressively introduced each of her emotions in different stages of her childhood. The same clip was later shown at a press event for the Director's Guild of America. If you're interested in reading a detailed description of the screened footage, head on over to Cinema Blend.

Also at that same Director's Guild event, Pixar veteran James Ford Murphy stepped onto the stage to unveil his new short film Lava, which will play in theaters in front of Inside Out next year. Disney and Pixar released an official synopsis for the short:

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, "Lava" is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.

From Pixar Animation Studios, director James Ford Murphy and producer Andrea Warren, "Lava" opens in theaters on June 19, 2015, in front of "Inside Out".

An official poster for Pixar's upcoming short film Lava

Early buzz for the upcoming short film, which was screened for attendees at the event, has been very positive.

Yup, that just about sounds like a Pixar short. Innovative, heartfelt, and sweet.

Murphy himself reportedly composed the short's song on ukulele, which will be sung by Hawaiian singers Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Grieg Makua. Again, none of this has been confirmed by Disney or Pixar, but it seems very plausible.

Back to the topic of Inside Out, several tidbits regarding the film have been dropped here and there over the past couple of months, so here are some of the most notable ones.

The official title treatment for Pixar's Inside Out

Pixar released a new official logo for the film (above), as well as a new synopsis for the film:

From the tepuis of South America to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In 2015, he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all - inside the mind of an 11-year-old named Riley.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city,
house and school.

Inside Out will be the second Pixar feature film to have a female protagonist, the first being 2012's Brave. The main character, however, is not the preteen Riley, but rather her emotion Joy, voiced by Amy Poehler. Riley will reportedly be to Inside Out what Andy is to the Toy Story films; while a key character in the story, she is not the protagonist.

Like the new Lava short, the 5-minute Inside Out clip has also sparked wild enthusiasm in those who saw it. Eric Eisenberg tweeted:
On June 19, Pixar's social media accounts posted this funny picture of director Pete Docter showing his excitement for his upcoming film by holding up a sketch of Joy.

We were also treated to a beautiful piece of concept art from the film, showcasing Joy inside the headquarters of Riley's mind.

Last of all, Docter signed autographs and gave out drawings like the one above featuring characters from Inside Out last month at Annecy. Expect the film's art book to be packed with fun doodles like this one!

This year sure is an odd one for Pixar news. It's been very quiet for the most part, but every now and then we get a sudden burst of exciting news about the studio's future projects. In March they announced the ever-coveted Incredibles sequel (and the not-so-coveted Cars threequel), and now we got a bunch of exciting details about their next feature film, as well as word on what their next short film will be! And though they seem far away now, a year flies by quicker than you think. Just think, Monsters University just turned a year old! So don't you worry, June 19, 2015 will be here in the blink of an eye, bringing two astounding Pixar films along with it.

D23 Madness! Part 2: Inside Out

Concept art from Pixar's Inside Out

Known as the filmmaking mastermind behind beloved works like Monsters, Inc. and Up, Pete Docter is back in the director's chair in the highly-anticipated Inside Out, set to hit theaters June 19, 2015. Audiences will delve into the peculiar world inside the human mind, or more specifically, the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley. Her various emotions make up much of the film's array of characters. The voice cast is as follows:

  • Amy Poehler voices the emotion of Joy
  • Phyllis Smith voices Sadness
  • Bill Hader (Whaddaya know!) voices Fear
  • Mindy Kaling voices Disgust
  • Lewis Black voices Anger

Again, another phenomenal bunch of voice talent. I've always admired Pixar for never selling out and hiring big, extremely well-known celebrities just for the sake of drawing more people to their film (*ahem* Epic, anyone?). I mean, sure, every now and then they do hire famous A-list actors and actresses (Tom Hanks, Ellen DeGeneres, etc) to voice characters in their films, but that's only when the filmmakers feel the actor actually suits the character. Also keep in mind, when they do hire famous celebrities, these celebrities are always actual actors. They would never go out and hire, I don't know, Pitbull perhaps? Nicki Minaj? Anyway...

Inside Out follows the aforementioned Riley as she moves to San Francisco and has to adjust to her new life while trying to make new friends. Meanwhile, we are taken inside her head and see how her different emotions react to her everyday experiences. Now here's where it really gets interesting. Riley's emotions apparently all work inside her mind in some sort of headquarters (Get it? Headquarters? Because it's all in her head?) and each character has a screen that allows him or her to see Riley's perspective. Here they perform various tasks, such as storing memories and adjusting her emotions. The mind has many different sections, such as Dream Production, Imaginationland (described as a Disneyland-esque amusement park), and Long-Term Memory. Everything is connected by the Train of Thought, which is, of course, portrayed by an actual train. The plot is set in motion when Joy and Sadness get the boot and are made to leave the headquarters, which means it's up to Fear, Anger and Disgust to operate Riley.

All I can say is...wow. This sounds absolutely flabbergasting just by reading about it! Anyone still convinced that the folks over in Emeryville have lost their "touch"? No? Good, that should mean everyone here is sane. Ladies and gentlemen, brace yourselves. Because in 2015 Pixar is treating us to what could very well be the most original film in years.

Pete Docter Spills (Some) Beans on 'Inside Out'

As this year's annual Pixar flick is out and most folks have already seen it, fans of the studio begin to look to the future for excitement. What does the future have in store? Well, in 2015, Pixar is treating audiences to a little film called Inside Out.

Directed by the one and only Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc., Up), this animated adventure will take us "to a place that everyone knows, but no one has ever seen". The studio's 16th feature film will allow us to venture inside an 11-year-old girl's mind and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, some of the emotions featured as prominent characters will be anger, sadness, disgust and joy.

Docter also revealed that the film will have two storylines taking place simultaneously - one being what occurs inside the protagonist's head, the other what happens on the outside. “One story is hard enough,” the director explained. “This is two stories that need to talk to each other.” Pete also gave us an idea as to what the film will look like and said, "The characters are created with this energy because we are trying to represent what emotions would look like. They are made up of particles that actually move. Instead of being skin and solid, it is a massive collection of energy. It’s a lot of fun and really takes advantage of what animation can do."

No doubt this will be unlike anything we've ever seen before, both visually and storywise.

Apart from Docter, several crew members from Up are back working on Inside Out, including producer Jonas Rivera, and story supervisor Ronnie del Carmen, who co-directs this new animated flick. The film is written by Michael Arndt, the mastermind scribe behind Toy Story 3's genius script, who is currently also working on penning Star Wars: Episode VII.

There's still a bit of time until Inside Out hits the silver screen, but in the meantime, help pass the time by going out to see Monsters University - whether it's for the first time or for the fiftieth. And hey, The Good Dinosaur will be here in less than a year, so that should make the wait until Docter's next project a whole lot easier.
