'Toy Story of TERROR' Coming to Blu-ray in August

At long last, some Pixar news!

Last October, Pixar premiered their first ever television special, Toy Story of Terror, to which audiences reacted quite warmly. For the past few months, fans have been wondering when the special will be available to own on home media, and we now have our answer.

The 22-minute special will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on August 19 and will be stuffed with plenty of bonus features, including the three existing Toy Story Toons short films; Hawaiian Vacation (2011, directed by Gary Rydstrom), Small Fry (2011, directed by Toy Story of Terror director Angus McLane), and Partysaurus Rex (2012, directed by Mark Walsh).

All three Toy Story Toons are already available on home media (Hawaiian Vacation on the Cars 2 Blu-ray/DVD and Pixar Short Films Collection: Vol. 2, which also includes Small Fry, and Partysaurus Rex on the Blu-ray re-release of Monsters, Inc.), though it's nice to see that they'll all be together on the same disc, and fans who haven't been able to get a hold of these shorts previously can now get them all in just one purchase.

Other extras on the Blu-ray set include faux vintage commercials for some the toys featured in Toy Story of Terror, similar to this Lotso one released as part of the marketing campaign for Toy Story 3:

The DVD will come with all the same bonus features as the Blu-ray excluding  the deleted scenes and editor introductions, and the Disney Movies Anywhere app will have an exclusive feature with Mr. Pricklepants as well as an additional deleted scene.

The TV special itself is an absolute blast (you can read my review here), but all the bonus material really makes this set worth picking up. Commentaries, deleted scenes - what more could you ask for?

Finally, Pixar released this trailer for the upcoming Blu-ray release, which gives us a sneak peek at some of the faux toy commercials included on the set.

This is a must-own for any Pixar or animation fan, so mark your calendars - Toy Story of Terror hits store shelves August 19!

Monsters University: Blu-ray Review

Pixar's fourteenth feature film made its way onto DVD and Blu-ray late last month, and most Pixar and animation fanatics seem to have picked up a copy. I just recently finished getting through all the phenomenal bonus features on the release (or most of them anyway) and thought I'd have a go at writing my first ever Blu-ray review. If you're a follower of this blog you probably already know that I quite thoroughly enjoyed the Monsters, Inc. prequel back when I first saw it in June (you can read my review here), so I was thrilled to be able to see it again at home in all its high-definition glory, as well as delight in all the fantastic in-depth bonus features that fans have come to expect from Pixar releases. So let's begin...

Picture Quality

Well, there's not much to say here really, other than that this flick looks absolutely stunning on Blu-ray - not that one should expect anything less from a Pixar release. Monsters University is one of this year's most colorful and vibrant films so far, and those colors really pop on the screen; the film's spectacular palette will leave you dazzled. The image is crystal clear, with lots little details, like Sulley's blue and purple fur and Randy's scaly skin, that are quite striking. Simply put, MU's Blu-ray presentation is visually flawless.

3D Quality

I did purchase the "Ultimate Collector's Edition" of the film, which comes with the Blu-ray 3D disc, and while I questioned whether I just get the 3D version for quite some time before buying the film, I am happy to say I do not regret my final decision. The 3D presentation retains the impeccable attributes of the regular 2D version while adding great visual depth to an already ravishing feast for the eyes. The college campus stretches deep into the display, making you feel as if you're really there with Mike as he first steps foot on the university. Like I said in my original review of the film, 3D isn't an essential element of Monsters U, but the film definitely makes for a beaming 3D experience.

Audio Quality
Brace yourself, as your surroundings may start to rumble after Sulley delivers one of his terrifying roars. Much like the visual presentation of the film, MU's audio is impeccable. Dialogue is nice and clear, and the wide array of monstrous sound effects throughout the movie is just as resonant.

Extras
As usual with Pixar films, there is an entire disc dedicated entirely to the countless of special features for Monsters University that give you an inside look at the Emeryville-based studio, famous for its fun and wacky antics. The extras should keep you occupied for a good while, and are complete with deleted scenes, some great featurettes, and even a virtual tour of the university campus. Needless to say, MU's bonus features live up to those of previous Pixar releases.


The Ultimate Collector's Edition of Monsters University delivers on all fronts, and not only does it meet its relatively high expectations, it exceeds them. Another bonus is that, as usual for Pixar Blu-rays, all four discs come with artwork on them, something that has become quite a rarity in Blu-ray releases these days. The slipcover is also very nice, and while I originally wasn't crazy about the artwork on this particular edition, I must say I've warmed up to it, even if I prefer the cover art for the regular Collector's Edition.

So if you've got some extra cash to spare and are looking for a superb addition to your movie collection, I strongly recommend you pick this one up!

Pre-Order Monsters University on Blu-ray

While Mike and Sulley are currently still busy pleasing audiences across the globe in theaters, Monsters University is already available for pre-order for those eager to get their hands all over a home video copy of the movie to enjoy in the warmth of their homes.

It looks like two different Blu-ray packs will be released for MU, as was the case last year with Brave. One will be a standard 2-disc "Collector's Edition" that will include both Blu-ray and DVD copies of the film, and the second will be the 4-disc "Ultimate Collector's Edition", which will come with three versions of the movie: Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD - and of course, the usual bonus disc that Pixar always treats its fans to, stacked to the brim with delightful bonus features. At first glance it seems as if Disney has trimmed off the Digital Copy from this release, but fear not, you'll still be able to enjoy Monsters U on your mobile device, the only difference from previous titles is that now you'll have to download your film from the web as opposed to from an extra disc.

The sad news is that Disney seems to be playing the same mean old trick on us that they did with Cars 2 - fans looking to get all the juicy bonus features will have to purchase the more expensive, 3D-inclusive Ultimate Collector's Edition of the film, as that precious extra disc will be absent from the standard, 3D-less Collector's Edition.

Regardless of that annoying fact, you'll still want to own Monsters University and add it to your collection! Pre-order now, or you know, you can always just patiently wait until it comes out and buy the movie in-store, it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray Re-Issue To Include MU Sneak Peek

Fans have long been craving a new full-length trailer for the upcoming prequel Monsters University,  but have been left to starve for quite some time now. No trailer came with Disney's Wreck-It Ralph in November, nor with Monsters, Inc. 3D in December, although they at least attached a neat little MU promo to the latter. However, it looks as if Pixar might finally give us the full-length trailer we have all been waiting for.

While the original Monsters, Inc. is already available on Blu-ray, it is being re-issued this month, and, naturally, it will now be available on Blu-ray 3D. We recently heard that Partysaurus Rex would be included on this release, but a new promo tells us that this is not all the new Blu will include.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are getting a sneak peek at Monsters University. Now this could be the new trailer, but there's the possibility that it is something else. In 2009 when Toy Story and Toy Story 2 came to Blu-ray, both films included some awesome little featurettes with director Lee Unkrich talking about the third installment into the Toy Story series, so perhaps this MU sneak peek will be something similar to that.

What's important is that we are getting a glimpse at Pixar's latest film - isn't that what we're all dying to see?

Partysaurus Rex Coming Home with Monsters

Monsters, Inc. hit theaters in 3D just last week, so it's only natural that the film is going to be given a Blu-ray 3D release in February. Pixar Talk reports that Partysaurus Rex, the Toy Story Toon that played in front of Finding Nemo 3D in September, will be included this new Monsters Blu-ray release.

Although the short can already be viewed on the official Toy Story website, it's going to be great seeing it in full high-definition and, of course, in 3D. Just imagine that colorful bathtub over-flowing right into your living room. Now wouldn't that be awesome?

Bring Partysaurus and Monsters, Inc. home on Blu-ray 3D on February 19th!

Finding Nemo Swims Onto Blu-ray!

Just when you thought your Christmas wishlist was complete, one of the most beloved animated films of all time arrives on Blu-ray in glorious high-definition.

If you watched Finding Nemo 3D in theaters back in September and were left dumbfounded, bewildered, and just plain bamboozled, then I suggest purchasing the new Ultimate Collector's Edition Blu-ray of the film, which just so happens to include the 3D version of the film. If you're not that big on 3D but still love the film and would delight in owning it on Blu-ray, there's also the regular Collector's Edition.

This is a must-have for any Pixar fan, and for film fans in general. It's been said countless times before, but Finding Nemo is one beautiful-looking movie, so just imagine seeing that movie with pristine video quality and unbelievable audio.

Feel free to check out my review of Nemo's 3D re-release, and if you're planning on buying the film on Blu-ray, Disney Movie Rewards has a coupon which will save you $5 on your purchase, which is valid until the 19th of this month (though only in the US and Canada).

Speaking of December 19th, Monsters, Inc. 3D hits theaters in just 15 days, and the Nemo Blu-ray comes with a free movie admission to see it! Disney and Pixar released this TV spot today:

'Monsters, Inc.' Coming to Blu-ray 3D!

This news has gone rather unnoticed, but it looks like Pixar's 2001 hit Monsters, Inc. will be arriving in the Blu-ray 3D format sometime soon, although we have no idea when exactly this will be.

Amazon has a 5-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition listed for pre-order, and Disney Movie Shop has also put up an offer which will save you $8 on your purchase of this Blu-ray combo pack. However, both sites claim that this release is "coming soon", but neither one states a fixed release date. I guess we can expect this to be out sometime after Monsters, Inc. 3D has hit theaters, likely around January. One thing's for certain though, the Blu-ray 3D of the film will be out by February 18, 2013, which is the date that Disney Movie Shop's offer expires.

No word on whether or not this pack will come with new bonus features or not, but chances are that it won't, but Pixar could always pleasantly surprise us.

I do not yet own Monsters, Inc. on Blu-ray, so I'll hopefully be able to pick up this release. Be sure to also check out A113Animation's review of Monsters, Inc. in 3D, it'll give you an idea of what to look forward to in the classic comedy's re-release.

Finding Nemo Blu-ray Trailer Hits Web

With Brave and the Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2 now out, the Blu-ray release of Pixar's beloved Finding Nemo is just on the horizon. Yes, at long last we'll be able to own every single one of the studio's films on Blu-ray, as the 2003 aquatic adventure remains the only one to not yet be available in the format.

Disney and Pixar posted the trailer for this Blu-ray release:

You'll be able to purchase a 3-disc Collector's Edition (two Blu-ray discs and the DVD), or the 5-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition (Blu-ray 3D, two Blu-rays, DVD & digital copy), much like with Brave.

I'll be picking up the 3D version as this truly is the perfect film for the 3D format and I was blown away when I saw Nemo in 3D back in September (feel free to have a look at my review here).

Finding Nemo arrives on Blu-ray December 4th, and Up, which was the first ever Pixar movie to be released in theaters in 3D, will also be available for the first time on Blu-ray 3D on that same day.

Brave Hits Store Shelves!

And once again, we have come full circle. Yet another Pixar film has made it onto Blu-ray and DVD so we can all now enjoy it from the warmth of our homes and put in up on that shelf next to Pixar classics from years past. Brave, the thirteenth feature film to come out of the animation power house, has finally arrived on home video.

If you haven't yet made the jump from DVD to Blu-ray and don't plan on doing so anytime soon, you can purchase the standard DVD of the film, but keep in mind that you won't get a whole lot of special features with this version (just the new Legend of Mor'du short, La Luna, and the audio commentary).

For those who do own a Blu-ray player, you can get either the 3-disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray combo pack, which includes the the Blu-ray disc of the film, an entire Blu-ray disc dedicated entirely to bonus material, and the regular DVD. If you want to own the film in 3D, then you can get the 5-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition, which includes everything that the 3-disc version has, plus the 3D Blu-ray disc and the digital copy.

Retail stores often offer an extra bonus item the first few days that a film is on sale. Best Buy has a neat steelbook case and a nice little lunchbox, and Walmart is offering a cute Angus plush toy. Target's Digibook version includes a 32-page storybook of the film.

In the US, the DVD is selling for $19.99, the 3-disc Collector's Edition goes for $22.99, and the 5-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition is $27.99 (at most stores).

Also available today is Volume 2 of the Pixar Short Films Collection; a must have for all fanatics of the studio.

Home Video Update - Trailers for November Releases

Time flies, and we're already more than halfway through October, which means that pretty soon it'll be November and both Brave and the Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2 will be out on Blu-ray and DVD!

Pixar recently released one short trailer for each of next month's releases on their official YouTube channel. The one for Brave may contain certain bits of footage that you may want to avoid if you haven't already seen the movie. In the trailer for the Shorts Collection, you can listen to a couple of Pixar veterans talk about their early short films, which will be included on the new release.

Expect to see these on store shelves on November 13, right before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season!

Pixar Home Video Update: 'Brave' & Pixar Shorts - Volume 2

This year, the holiday season will, as always, see the arrival of several Pixar films on home video. Of course, we have Brave coming to Blu-ray on November 13, but that's not all. The Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2 will arrive on the same day.

The list of bonus features that will be included on the Brave Blu-ray has been released, and it sure is a pleasing sight - if you're a Pixar fan, that is.

I am a big fan of the bonus material on Pixar home video releases, and Brave sure seems like it is overflowing with special features, which will no doubt keep me and many other fans occupied for ours.

Also, it appears the studio is returning to its old tradition of including an all-new short in every home video release, featuring characters from that year's feature film.

Here is the list:

BLU-RAY – DISC 1 INCLUDES:

• La Luna Theatrical Short — Fans will love this charming short that accompanied the film in theatres. It follows a young boy on his first night working the family business alongside his father and grandfather.
• The Legend of Mor’du Short — This rousing new bonus short film will give fans the chance to delve deeper into the legend behind Mor'du, as told by the eccentric witch who transformed him.
• Brave Old World — Fans will watch as members of the “Brave” production team investigate Scotland, exploring its land, culture, people and dialects. The research they gathered was brought thrillingly to life in the film. Also, fans will hear what actress Emma Thompson (voice of Queen Elinor) thinks of Pixar’s take on her homeland.

Callum O'Neil, the voice of Wee Dingwall in Brave, recently talked to Female First about the short that will accompany the film's home video release:

"There is a short film in the Brave DVD, that is being put in there as an extra, it is about two minutes long and is a scene between my character and Julie Walters' character the witch.

Now Julie Walters and I have never met even though we are in the same scene together - she was in the studio between the 5pm and 7pm and I was in the studio from 7pm until 8pm."

I can hardly wait. Not only will we learn more of the demon bear Mor'du, but expect the new short to be jam-packed with humor and fun.

The Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2 is also now available for pre-order on Amazon and will include every Pixar short from Your Friend the Rat up until La Luna, as well as the first two Toy Story Toons. It remains unknown if Partysaurus Rex will join the collection. Stitch Kingdom also tells us that the collection will include student short films made by Pixarians before joining the company. Such shorts include John Lasseter's Nitemare and The Lady and the Lamp. This Blu-ray/DVD is a must-buy for any Pixar fanatic.

Be sure to set some money aside for November 13, when Brave and the Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2 hit store shelves.

'Brave' Now Available for Pre-Order

Only three weeks after its release in theaters, Pixar's animated feature Brave is now available for pre-order on the popular online retailer Amazon.

Like previous Disney and Pixar home releases, a 3-disc collector's edition (with two Blu-ray discs and a DVD) and a 5-disc "Ultimate Collector's Edition" (which includes a 3D Blu-ray disc, two regular Blu-rays, a DVD, and a digital copy) will be released.

No release date has been announced just yet, but expect sometime around November or December. There's a possibility that it could arrive on the the same day as the Nemo Blu-ray, but most of the time Pixar releases their films on the home video format in early November, just before the holiday season.

I'm also quite excited to see what bonus features Pixar packs into the Brave home release, but I am sure that whatever they put in will not disappoint fans of the studio.

Sneak Peek at 'Finding Nemo' Blu-ray!

The Pixar Times has nabbed some photos of the cover for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the Pixar classic, Finding Nemo. The film remains the only movie from the studio to not yet be available on the Blu-ray format, but that will change in December.

With the photos, we get a look at what super-awesome bonus features the new release of the film will have. If you decide to go for the 3D Blu-ray version (which includes a 3D Blu-ray, two regular Blu-rays, a DVD, and a digital copy), then you'll get the chance to enjoy the immersive HD Aquariums in 3D. I remember the virtual aquariums from the original DVD edition, and back then they blew my mind, so I can only imagine how spectacular they'll be in gorgeous high-definition and 3D!

Pixar extras are always very exciting to watch, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing all these new additions. Also, the original bonus features from the DVD will likely also be included on the Blu-ray; the DVD was also jam-packed with fabulous bonus material.

Finding Nemo: On Blu-ray This December

This is it, folks. The moment we've all been waiting for. This holiday season, you'll be able to own ALL of Pixar's beloved films, from Toy Story to Brave, in glorious high-definition! Andrew Stanton's classic Finding Nemo, the only film from the studio that hasn't already hit the Blu-ray format, is set to arrive in Blu on December 4 this year.

A Blu-ray 3D version will also be released, considering the film is also having its theatrical 3D re-release this year. Other than finally being to enjoy the classic tale is beautiful HD, there's really not much to expect from this release, although there is a chance we may see some new bonus features. If no new material is added however, I won't be too disappointed; the original DVD release from 2003 already had as many special features as there are fish in the sea.

What I find a bit odd is how this is apparently being released in early December rather than early November. Pixar's films normally hit home video during the first few days of November, and are usually accompanied by some other Pixar release. Toy Story 3 arrived on DVD and Blu-ray the same day that the Cars Toons collection did, Monsters, Inc. made its Blu-ray debut alongside Up, and so forth. The Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2 will surely come on the same day as Brave this year, in early November. Maybe Pixar just wanted us to have something to look forward to in the month of December too?

Pixar Shorts Volume 2: Coming in November!

I recently wrote an article about when we'd see Pixar's short, Small Fry (which was released in theaters in November 2011 with Disney's The Muppets) on home video. My top prediction had been that the short would apper on the Brave Blu-ray and DVD, but I had talked about the possibility of the short showing up on a Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2.

Pixar Talk tells us how this second bundle of Pixar shorts is set to arrive in November; very likely on the same day Brave will hit the home video format. Small Fry will surely be on this collection, and you can also expect it to have all Pixar shorts starting at Your Friend the Rat (2007) all the way to La Luna (2011), which will also be premiering on home video for the first time alongside Small Fry.

So you can mark your calendars and start looking forward to November!

When Will We See 'Small Fry' on Home Video?

The second Toy Story Toon after Hawaiian Vacation, entitled Small Fry, hit theaters in November with Disney's The Muppets. Now, Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang have made their way onto DVD and Blu-ray, but Small Fry is nowhere to be found on the home release of the film.

This doesn't very much shock me, however. While Pixar may sometimes premiere their shorts in front of non-Pixar films (Tokyo Mater first debuted with Disney's Bolt), these short films will never show up on the actual home video release of the film with which they were released with in theaters. So when will we get the chance to see Small Fry on our own televisions?

Some people expect it to be on the Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 2. Volume 1 showcased all of Pixar's short films from the company's first 20 years (1986 to 2006). Fans are anticipating Volume 2 to be released sometime in the near future, and see it as a possibility for Small Fry to debut on the home video format. Of course, it has not yet been announced when Volume 2 will arrive, and it could be a fairly long time away.

Another possibility, which I see as a much more likely one, is Small Fry being on the Brave home release. Last year Cars 2 had Hawaiian Vacation, so I don't see why they couldn't put Small Fry with Brave this year. And Pixar almost always includes two short films with each of their films, so Brave would probably come with La Luna and Small Fry.

I guess only time will tell when Small Fry will come home, but I have high hopes for early November of this year with Brave!

Cars 2 Now Available on Blu-ray and DVD!

The wait is over. Cars 2 has crossed the finish line, and has finally arrived on home video, for anyone to enjoy in the warmth of their home.

As all previous Pixar home video releases, the Cars 2 Blu-ray and DVD is jam-packed with loads of spectacular bonus features, all giving the ultimate inside scoop into the making of the film. If you want the very best special feature experience possible, I would recommend the 5-disc Blu-ray edition, as it comes with an entire disc filled with exclusive bonus material.

Sneak Peek at Cars 2 Blu-ray/DVD!

We are already halfway through the month of October, and before you know it, it'll be November! And you know what that means...Cars 2 on Blu-ray and DVD!

As always, Pixar has released a few clips of what is to come on their next home release.

Check out this cool trailer for the film. It's not a new trailer however, it's one of the ones we saw a few months ago before the theatrical release of Cars 2. So now instead of "Coming soon to theaters" it says "Coming soon to Blu-ray and DVD", but it's still a really awesome trailer.

Here is a short clip called "Getting Behind The Wheel", which shows how the geniuses behind the sequel to Cars got to experience the racing world while making the film.

The next clip is an extended look at Hawaiian Vacation, the Toy Story Toon which played in front of Cars 2 in theaters, and will be included as a bonus feature on the home video release. If you haven't watched Hawaiian Vacation, I think that this clip gives you a pretty good taste of what the short has in store.

Lastly, here is a 5-minute sneak peek at Cars 2 itself. That's right! Five full minutes of awesome footage from Cars 2! It's the entire scene where Mater gets Lightning involved in the World Grand Prix after seeing the cocky Francesco Bernoulli boast about how he could easily beat Lightning McQueen in a race.

Also, you may have seen this already, but here is a nice and short look into Air Mater, the latest Cars Toon, which will be on the Cars 2 Blu-ray and DVD as well.

Nemo Finally Coming to Blu-ray!

Andrew Stanton's classic Pixar film Finding Nemo remains the only Pixar films that hasn't been released in glorious Blu-ray high-definition....that is, until now.

Disney and Pixar have announced that the beloved tale about family, friendship, and taking risks is, at last, coming home in HD. How did they make the announcement? By uploading a teaser trailer for the Blu-ray release of course!

As you can see, this teaser is a simple yet clever twist to the famous scene from the film, and also the first real proof we have that Nemo actually is finally coming to Blu-ray!

A release date for the Finding Nemo Blu-ray has not been confirmed just yet, but stay tuned as we are bound to hear in the months to come.

Cars 2 Coming to Home Video Nov. 1st

After having recently heard some of the Blu-ray and DVD details about Cars 2, we now have an actual release date! The film is set to hit store shelves on November 1st, and will feature an all new Cars Toon, entitled Air Mater. A clip from the Toon has been posted onto YouTube by Disney/Pixar (watch below). I've heard rumours that this Air Mater is being produced at Pixar Canada. Just take a look at this picture that was posted on the web when the Vancouver studio first opened.

The Cars 2 Blu-ray and DVD will also include Hawaiian Vacation, which premiered alongside Cars 2 in theaters in June.
